Silks Crown Casino Perth

We had family dinner at Silks tonight at Crown Perth. It is the newly opened Chinese restaurant in the recently refurbished and rebranded casino situated in Burswood. It took over the location where Paddy Hannan’s used to be. Paddys was going downhill anyways so this is definitely a good change.

Ambience: Newly refurbished cream and gold theme. Decorated with floral silky wall panels and glass features in the ceiling. 3 Chinese olden day vases were featured in the middle of the restaurant. Tables were nicely spaced out giving each table some privacy (unlike most Chinese restaurants trying to utilise floor space to the best of its potential). There are a few private rooms near the back to book out for private functions.

Service: Staff were not attentive to us. They were more focused on other tables that ordered wine and seafood.

Food: Small dishes. I’ve heard that they do not use MSG? The eggplant and lamb were quite tasty but veggies just looked and tasted plain sad. I was really looking forward to the dessert as I had seen some pics posted on my friend’s Facebook. It was nice but not great…just looked pretty that’s all.

Dishes we ordered:

  • Stir Fried Squid with Zucchini and Black Fungus ($38)
  • Mongolian Lamb ($48)
  • Braised Free Range Chicken ($38)
  • Braised Egg Plant with Minced Pork and Salted Fish ($38)
  • Steamed Chinese spinach ($28)
  • Sesame Pudding Coconut Gel, Black Sesame Mousse, Coconut Crunch, Caramelised Banana Ice Cream ($16)
  • Mango Crème, Lime Streusel, Coconut and Lime Sorbet, Compressed Mango ($16)

Price: Bill came to about $270 for 5 people which is overly priced for an Asian meal considering we didn’t order any fancy seafood. However, approx. $50 per person is quite standard in comparison to a Western meal. $28 for a small steamed spinach really?! We didn’t even order anything out of the ordinary. The total of our dishes ordered was $222 so the other $50 comprised of surcharges for rice, tea, and other service fees. We weren’t full but we weren’t left hungry.

Overall: Nothing to boost about except the deco. I never really enjoyed Yu restaurant which was Silks’ predecessor and this is just an even more glorified version of Yu. The flavours are nothing to rave about and even if they don’t use MSG in their dishes I wouldn’t choose healthy over taste in this case. Although I’m actually quite curious to try their dimsum menu. I wouldn’t write this restaurant off completely yet. Still a lot that I haven’t tried so I will give it another shot in the distant future.
